"Cartoon Q measures the familiarity and appeal of characters for TV, comics, movies, food products, media, video games, toys, entertainment venues/activities, and other categories, among kids, teens and adults."

Cartoon Q data enable our clients to make informed decisions about a specific character's demographic appeal and/or examine the field of possible alternatives.

Cartoon Q studies are conducted as follows:

  • Studies are fielded every six months in May & November.
  • Each study measures over 600 characters, whose names and descriptions are submitted by full-study subscribing clients. Individual orders are also accepted.
  • Each character is rated by a nationally representative sample of 1,800 children, teens, and adults (including mothers of "tots").

Three ways to obtain Cartoon Q data:

  • Full study
  • Demographic profile data on one or more characters
  • Ranking of all 600+ characters among a demographic "target" audience

Data are available from earlier studies, dating back to 1983.

Custom Character Research

There are occasions when the schedule of our syndicated Cartoon Q studies is not timely, or we may not have recent - or any - data on a particular character or property. Fortunately, we offer the following supplemental custom research:

Custom Cartoon Q: Launch your own version of Cartoon Q with a smaller sample and abbreviated questionnaire at any time. National or regional samples are selected from our consumer panel using your specified demographic requirements. These custom versions of Cartoon Q utilize the "norms" from the syndicated studies.

Character Evaluation Studies: While Cartoon Q examines the familiarity and appeal of a large number of characters and properties, custom studies may be needed to go beyond what Cartoon Q currently measures. Diagnostic research can determine a character or property's image.

Program Evaluation: With a large group of children and parents pre-screened for television program viewership and preferences, it is possible to conduct studies to determine character issues, storylines or time period changes among program viewers.

The cost of locating viewers to conduct a diagnostic study is usually high. We provide a "free screening" from Cartoon Q, twice a year.
